The world debut of the new Audi RS 4 Avant recently took place at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The latest incarnation with the RS badge brings together astounding everyday versatility with extraordinary performance from a 2.9 TFSI engine which delivers 450PS and 600Nm of torque by the standard quattro drive.
Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH, Stephan Winkelmann, said “The Audi RS 4 Avant is our RS icon with an incomparable history. In common with all our RS models, it blends immense power output with superlative everyday utility.”
A Striking Silhouette
This is the fourth generation of the Audi RS 4 Avant where designers took inspiration from various motorsport features of the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO for its creation. Large air inlets with typical RS honeycomb structure and the wide, flat Singleframe grille characterize the front end. The wheel arches are 30 millimetres wider with added emphasis by the quattro blisters when compared to the Audi A4 Avant.
If you glance at the rear profile you’ll notice the RS-specific diffuser insert, the oval tailpipes of the RS exhaust system and the RS roof edge spoiler which make for a singular and impressive look. The Nogaro blue exterior colour points a gesture towards the Avant from 1999 which was the first generation of this high-performance vehicle to hit the roads and the stunning 19-inch forged aluminium wheels add a finishing touch.
Impressive Power Stats
As ever, Audi manage to pack an awful lot of power into the mix, with the V6 biturbo engine which creates 450PS and a peak torque of 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) – 170 Nm (125.4 lb-ft) which is more than the previous model, which is available across a broad engine speed range from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm. This is how the Audi RS 4 is able to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in an astonishing 4.1 seconds.
With a top speed of 155mph (which with the optional RS dynamic package can achieve a top speed of 174mph) this car impresses at every level. The power of the 2.9 TFSI biturbo is sent to the all-wheel drive via an eight-speed tiptronic with optimised ratios.
The standard-fit RS sport suspension puts the Audi RS 4 Avant an extra 7 millimetres lower than the standard A4 with sport suspension and drivers can define their own individual personal driving experience using the standard dynamic handling system Audi drive select.
Racing Inspired Cockpit
The character of the Audi RS 4 Avant is defined by the black interior. RS sport seats with optional honeycomb
pattern, the flat-bottomed RS leather sport steering wheel and the shift gate and the illuminated door sill trims are all branded with the RS logo. In the Audi virtual cockpit RS-specific displays indicate the g-forces, tyre pressures and torque.
The styling packages gloss black; carbon with aluminium attachments and carbon with black attachments allow owners additional customisation options.
